Job Description

About Anthropic

Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

Program Overview

The Anthropic Fellows Program is designed to foster AI research and engineering talent. We provide funding and mentorship to promising technical talent – regardless of previous experience. This is an exceptional opportunity for researchers and engineers passionate about AI safety, security, and beneficial AI development.

Fellows will primarily use external infrastructure (e.g. open-source models, public APIs) to work on an empirical project aligned with Anthropic's research priorities, with the goal of producing a public output such as a paper submission. In one of our earlier cohorts, over 80% of fellows produced papers that advanced the field.

What You'll Receive

  • 4 months of full-time research focused on high-impact AI safety and security projects
  • Direct mentorship from Anthropic researchers – gain guidance from leading experts in the field
  • Access to shared workspace in Berkeley, California or London, UK
  • Connection to the broader AI safety and security research community – network with peers and industry leaders
  • Weekly stipend: $3,850 USD / £2,310 GBP / $4,300 CAD + location-specific benefits
  • Research compute funding: ~$15,000/month for computational resources and research expenses

Application Timeline

The next cohort starts July 20, 2026. Apply by April 26, 2026 to be considered for this cohort. Anthropic runs multiple cohorts annually and reviews applications on a rolling basis. In exceptional circumstances, the team may accommodate fellows starting outside usual cohort timelines.

Interview Process

The selection process includes an initial application review and reference checks, followed by technical assessments and interviews, and concludes with a research discussion to assess fit and potential impact.

Diversity & Inclusion

Anthropic strongly encourages applications from all candidates, including those from underrepresented groups in AI and technology. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Research shows that people from underrepresented backgrounds are more prone to imposter syndrome and may doubt their candidacy prematurely. If you're interested in this work, submit your application. Anthropic recognizes that AI systems have enormous social and ethical implications, making diverse perspectives essential to the team.

Program Details

This fully-funded fellowship is ideal for early-career researchers, graduate students, and engineers seeking to make meaningful contributions to AI safety research. You'll work on projects aligned with Anthropic's research agenda while building your publication record and professional network in one of the most important areas of AI research today.

💰 Compensation structure: Weekly stipend of $3,850 USD (approximately $200K annualized), plus ~$15K/month compute budget. Market estimate for similar AI research fellowships: $70K–$100K base salary equivalent, varying by experience and location. Additional benefits vary by country.
