Job Description

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, powers breakthrough initiatives in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We're a founder-led, profitable company with 1000+ colleagues across 70+ countries, pioneering global distributed collaboration with minimal office-based roles. We're hiring an Alliances Field Engineer to help our largest partners—including Intel, Nvidia, Google, Dell, HP, Accenture, and Tata—understand and embrace our open source platform for their own operations and customer solutions.

The Role

Our worldwide field engineering team applies expert insights to real-world customer problems, enabling enterprise adoption of Ubuntu, OpenStack, Kubernetes, AI/MLOps, and associated technologies. We're experts across the entire open source stack—from kernel to desktop, cloud to edge. This team understands both technical excellence and business value: building solutions that are reliable, efficient, and cost-effective. You'll be supporting OEM (hardware manufacturers), GSI (global system integrators), ISV (independent software vendors), channel partners, and public cloud alliance partners in adopting Canonical products and technologies.

Field engineers at Canonical have what we call "the hardest job"—customers expect thoughtful, well-informed answers on any aspect of our solutions. We're committed to doing what's best for partners and customers first, and field engineers ensure that principle holds true.

What Your Day Will Look Like

  • Understand Ubuntu, Linux, networking, and services in real-world enterprise environments
  • Architect cloud infrastructure solutions including Kubernetes, Kubeflow, OpenStack, Ceph, and Spark—both on-premises and public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Architect and integrate popular open source software such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Cassandra, and NGINX
  • Help partners offer and architect joint solutions leveraging Canonical technologies on public clouds and in data centers
  • Design and publish joint Reference Architectures and perform technical validations with various partners
  • Prepare and deliver onboarding sessions and workshops to partners' teams, promoting Canonical products and solutions
  • Engage with business leaders to define joint go-to-market programs from a technical standpoint
  • Provide pre-sales technical support and architectural guidance for partnership initiatives

Why Join Canonical

You'll work with a globally distributed team that meets 2-4 times yearly in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution. This role offers the opportunity to shape how enterprise organizations worldwide adopt open source infrastructure and cloud-native technologies. You'll have direct impact on strategic partnerships and technical direction for some of the world's most influential technology companies.

Location

This is a fully remote, home-based role. We hire talented professionals worldwide.
