About the Role
Pragmatike is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Compute Team, responsible for the core compute platform that powers all backend services. This is a pivotal technical leadership position combining hands-on engineering expertise with team mentorship. You'll lead approximately 8 engineers while maintaining ~50% hands-on contribution to production-grade code, making strategic architectural decisions that shape the company's infrastructure foundation.
The Compute Team owns foundational systems on which infrastructure, applications, and automation run. As Engineering Manager, you'll set technical direction, drive platform evolution, and ensure the delivery of scalable, reliable systems that support the entire organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of software engineers focused on compute and platform engineering
- Architecture & Strategy: Drive architectural direction for the compute platform with emphasis on reliability, scalability, and developer experience
- Hands-On Engineering: Contribute directly to design, implementation, and optimization of core compute services including orchestration, provisioning, scaling, and runtimes
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Infrastructure, Security, and Backend teams to define priorities and ensure seamless integrations
- People Development: Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and technical coaching to grow team capabilities
- Engineering Excellence: Foster a culture of ownership, technical excellence, and continuous improvement across the team
- Execution Planning: Translate strategic objectives into actionable execution plans with clear timelines and accountability
- Technical Decision-Making: Make pragmatic, forward-looking technical decisions that influence platform evolution
- Best Practices: Champion best practices in software development, automation, and operational excellence
Required Experience & Skills
- Leadership Background: 7+ years in software engineering with 2+ years in technical leadership or engineering management roles
- Cloud Platform Expertise: Strong expertise with AWS (EC2, ECS, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch preferred)
- Backend Development: Solid experience building distributed backend systems using Golang
- Infrastructure & Platform: Proven track record in infrastructure, platform engineering, compute orchestration, reliability engineering, and observability
- Container & Orchestration: Familiarity with Kubernetes, containerization, and service mesh technologies (Istio, Envoy)
- Infrastructure-as-Code: Experience with IaC tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or AWS CDK
- CI/CD Automation: Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and tools (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, or similar)
- Systems Knowledge: Strong knowledge of Linux systems, networking fundamentals, and monitoring/alerting best practices
- Communication: Excellent leadership and communication skills with ability to guide performance, set expectations, and influence across teams
