Job Description

About ProPublica

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom dedicated to producing investigative journalism in the public interest. While the majority of ProPublica's work comes from our in-house staff, we actively consider supporting ambitious accountability stories and investigative projects from independent journalists whose work aligns with our organizational mission and editorial standards.

The Opportunity

ProPublica invites freelance journalists to submit investigative story pitches for consideration. We're seeking independent journalists with strong reporting skills, compelling story ideas, and a commitment to accountability journalism that serves the public interest. This is an excellent opportunity for freelancers to collaborate with one of the nation's most respected nonprofit newsrooms on impactful investigative work.

What We're Looking For

We accept investigations that are revelatory or substantially advance what is known on a subject of public importance. Your investigation should:

  • Have the potential to trigger needed reforms by identifying a problem, who is responsible, and what should change
  • Clearly demonstrate harm to affected individuals or communities
  • Be rooted in a place or focus on a person while illuminating an issue of broader relevance
  • Move beyond speculation—presenting a clear hypothesis backed by significant reporting, not merely wondering whether something bad is happening

Proposal Requirements

Strong proposals include the following elements:

  • Clear hypothesis and reporting foundation: Demonstrate that you know (rather than wonder) that a problem exists, based on substantial preliminary reporting
  • Specific evidence: Include details about anecdotes, data, documents you've already gathered, and what you expect to find
  • Accountability angle: Outline possible accountability stories you want to tell and the reforms you hope to catalyze
  • Project scope: Detail what the investigation will require—data work, travel, obtaining public records, interviews, and other reporting resources
  • Existing assets: Describe what data, documents, and source relationships you already possess that strengthen your proposal
  • Your expertise: Explain why you are particularly suited to conduct this investigation, including relevant background, experience, and subject matter expertise

Compensation & Terms

For accepted proposals, ProPublica pays competitive freelance rates, including reporting expenses. Freelancers work as independent contractors and will not be classified as employees. You will be responsible for paying any required taxes on compensation received and understanding applicable tax laws in your jurisdiction.

Timeline & Contact

ProPublica begins reviewing applications upon receipt and aims to notify candidates about their proposals within two weeks of submission. Have questions? Email talent@propublica.org. Phone calls are not accepted.

Diversity & Inclusion

ProPublica is dedicated to improving its newsroom by better reflecting the people it covers. We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds. If you believe you have important skills or perspectives not described above, we encourage you to apply and tell us about yourself.

💰 Compensation not publicly listed. Market estimate for similar roles: from $80K, varying by experience, project scope, and location.
