Job Description

About Simular

At Simular, we're building the next generation of computer user agents—AI systems that can actually use your computer for you. Our platform represents a fundamental shift in how humans interact with technology, leveraging advanced AI to automate complex computational tasks. Our backend powers everything from live VM orchestration to agent planning and execution, handling the intricate technical challenges that make autonomous computer use possible at scale.

The Role

We're seeking a generalist backend and infrastructure engineer who thrives in ambiguity, possesses strong architectural instincts, and wants to own significant, evolving pieces of our system. This is not a narrow "DevOps" or "API engineer" position—you'll be actively shaping how our platform scales and evolves over the next several years. You'll work at the intersection of infrastructure, systems design, and product development, making critical decisions that impact how thousands of users interact with our agent infrastructure.

What You'll Do

  • Design and scale the systems powering Simular Cloud and our cross-platform agents, ensuring reliability and performance across global deployments.

  • Own critical backend services including APIs, data flows, billing systems, observability infrastructure, and deployment pipelines—taking end-to-end responsibility for their quality and evolution.

  • Tackle hard infrastructure challenges: VM orchestration, reproducibility, parallel execution, fault tolerance, and system reliability at scale.

  • Identify when services need to be split or refactored, then lead that architectural evolution with technical leadership and clear communication.

  • Explore new technical directions as the product grows—from microVMs and multi-agent orchestration to fine-tuned model endpoints, community task galleries, and emerging infrastructure patterns.

  • Collaborate closely with product and research teams to translate ambitious ideas into robust, production-ready systems that serve real users.

Who You Are

You're a strong programmer with solid fundamentals in languages like Python, Go, Rust, or similar. Beyond language proficiency, you bring:

  • Architectural thinking: You understand the difference between "quick hacks" and "systems built for the long run." You make intentional trade-offs and can justify your technical decisions.

  • Systems experience: You have hands-on experience with some combination of cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, virtualization, CI/CD pipelines, and container orchestration—and more importantly, you can rapidly acquire expertise in whatever's needed.

  • Ownership mindset: You're comfortable picking up big, ambiguous problems and seeing them through from conception to production, making decisions with incomplete information.

  • Learning agility: You thrive when requirements evolve and you need to master new domains quickly.

  • Bonus experience: GPU scheduling, large-scale ML infrastructure, SaaS scaling challenges, or experience building platforms that serve other engineers.

Why Join Simular

You'll work on a technically ambitious project at the frontier of AI and systems engineering. This role offers the opportunity to build infrastructure that enables entirely new categories of automation. You'll have significant technical autonomy, work alongside talented engineers and researchers, and directly influence the architecture of a platform that could reshape how people work with computers.

💰 Compensation not publicly listed. Market estimate for similar roles: from $120K, varying by experience and location.
