Senior Backend Software Engineer (USA Remote)

About This Role

Turnitin is seeking an experienced Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our remote team. This is a full-time position for a talented engineer who excels at designing and building scalable backend systems that power our industry-leading academic integrity and student success platform.

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will take ownership of critical backend services, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architectural decisions that impact millions of users globally. You'll work with modern technologies and best practices while solving complex technical challenges in the education technology space.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and APIs serving millions of requests daily
• Collaborate with product, frontend, and DevOps teams to deliver high-quality features
• Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code following industry best practices
• Contribute to code reviews and mentor junior team members
• Optimize performance and scalability of existing systems
• Participate in architectural planning and technical design discussions
• Troubleshoot production issues and implement reliable solutions
• Document technical decisions and system designs for team knowledge sharing

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience
• Strong proficiency in one or more backend programming languages (Java, Python, Go, Node.js, or similar)
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and API design
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
• Solid knowledge of software design patterns and SOLID principles
• Proven ability to write testable code with comprehensive test coverage
• Experience with version control systems (Git) and CI/CD pipelines
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Background in edtech or SaaS products
• Experience leading technical projects or mentoring engineers
• Knowledge of security best practices and compliance standards
• Contributions to open-source projects
