Employer of Record for Remote Jobs: A Candidate Guide

An employer of record, often shortened to EOR, is a local entity that formally employs a worker for another company. The worker normally performs day-to-day work for the client company while the EOR manages the local employment agreement, payroll and selected compliance processes.

Identify every party

Ask for the legal name of the EOR, the client company and the entity responsible for salary, expenses, equipment, performance management and termination decisions. Recruitment branding can make these roles unclear unless the relationship is documented.

Compare the local package

Benefits, leave, pension and payroll treatment may depend on the EOR and hiring country rather than the client company’s headquarters. Ask which policies are contractual, which are discretionary and whether colleagues in different countries receive different packages.

Understand continuity risk

Ask what happens if the client changes EOR provider, opens a local entity or ends its commercial relationship with the provider. Clarify service recognition, accrued leave, equity and notice treatment. Do not assume they transfer automatically.

Questions candidates should ask

  • Which company appears as employer on the contract?
  • Who pays salary and reimburses expenses?
  • Which country’s holidays and leave rules apply?
  • Who handles payroll or benefits errors?
  • How are grievances and performance issues managed?
  • Does the arrangement affect equity eligibility?
  • What happens when the commercial contract ends?

EOR is not immigration permission

An EOR arrangement does not itself grant residence or work authorisation. Confirm immigration requirements independently with official authorities. Likewise, the existence of an EOR does not guarantee that every country is supported.
