How to Become a DevOps Engineer: Step-by-Step Career Guide

A
Alberto Mabjaia·July 27, 2026·7 min read

DevOps engineers, often titled site reliability or platform engineers, build and run the systems that let other engineers ship safely: cloud infrastructure defined as code, CI/CD pipelines, container platforms, observability and incident response. The role is judged by reliability, deployment speed and how much toil it removes for everyone else.

This guide sets out realistic routes into the profession, a staged plan with the evidence to collect at each step, projects that prove you can do the work, and the first job titles to search for. It also shows live data on current DevOps engineer vacancies so you can see what employers are asking for today.

What a DevOps engineer does day to day

  • Writing Terraform or Pulumi to provision a new environment and getting it reviewed like application code.
  • Improving a CI pipeline so builds finish in minutes instead of half an hour.
  • Tuning alerts so on-call engineers are paged for real problems only.
  • Leading or supporting an incident and writing the post-incident review.
  • Reviewing cloud spend and right-sizing workloads.

Can you work remotely as a DevOps engineer?

This profession is highly remote-friendly. Infrastructure is managed through code and cloud consoles, so the work is inherently remote. The main constraint is on-call: rotations usually require you to be reachable during defined hours, and some employers limit hiring to regions that can cover their follow-the-sun schedule. Security clearance requirements rule out remote hiring for some government work.

Routes into the profession

RouteTypical timeBest for
From software engineering6–18 months of platform-focused workThe most common route: engineers who own their deployment pipelines and cloud resources grow into platform roles.
From system administration or IT operations9–18 monthsStrong on networking, Linux and operations; the gap is usually coding, Git workflows and infrastructure as code.
Structured cloud training plus lab portfolio9–15 monthsPossible, but pure career changers typically enter via cloud support or junior operations roles first.

A staged plan

Timings assume steady part-time effort and will vary with your starting point. Move on when you have the evidence, not when the calendar says so.

StageFocusEvidence to collect
Months 0–3: Linux and networkingShell, processes, permissions, DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS, one scripting language.A home server or VM you administer, with notes on problems solved.
Months 3–6: cloud and IaCOne cloud provider's core services, IAM, VPC design, Terraform.A Terraform repository that deploys a web app with a database and load balancer.
Months 6–9: containers and CI/CDDocker, Kubernetes basics, GitHub Actions or GitLab CI, deployment strategies.A pipeline that tests, builds and deploys an app to Kubernetes with rollback.
Months 9–12: observability and operationsPrometheus, Grafana, logging, alerting, incident practice.Dashboards and alerts on your lab, plus a written incident review of a failure you simulated.

The skills employers actually test

Hiring processes for DevOps engineer roles are built to check a consistent set of abilities. Plan your learning so you can show evidence of each:

  • Incident triage under pressure.
  • Infrastructure-as-code maintainability.
  • Reliability engineering beyond uptime slogans.
  • Automation mindset with measurable results.
  • Supply-chain and access-control awareness.
  • Hands-on container debugging.
  • Cost awareness and prioritisation.
  • Influence and pragmatic risk management.

Projects that prove you can do the work

Employers hire evidence. Each of these projects produces something you can show and discuss in an interview:

  • A fully automated deployment of a sample app: Terraform for infrastructure, CI pipeline, Kubernetes manifests or Helm, and monitoring.
  • A chaos exercise on your lab: kill a node or database and document detection, recovery and fixes.
  • A cost report and optimisation of your own cloud account with before-and-after spend.
  • A reusable Terraform module published with documentation and tests.

First job titles to search for

Entry roles are rarely titled simply "DevOps engineer". Search for these titles too:

Moving from an adjacent role

Many people reach this profession from roles such as backend software engineer, linux system administrator, network engineer, technical support engineer. Coming from system administration, support engineering or backend development? Emphasise automation you have written, infrastructure you have operated and incidents you have handled, then show a public infrastructure-as-code project that deploys a real service.

Certifications worth considering

The hands-on Kubernetes exams (CKA, CKAD) carry the most credibility in DevOps interviews because they are practical. Cloud certifications help most when they match the employer's provider. Pair any exam with a public repository that deploys something real.

  • HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate — HashiCorp; associate level. Best for early-career engineers proving IaC fundamentals; inexpensive and quick.
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional — Amazon Web Services; professional level. Best for experienced engineers at AWS-heavy companies or consultancies that bill for certified staff.
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) — The Linux Foundation / CNCF; professional level. Best for anyone running Kubernetes in production; widely recognised because it cannot be passed by memorisation.

How the career usually progresses

Most people start in one of the entry titles above, take on larger pieces of work within two to three years, and then choose between deeper specialisation and leading others. Pay generally follows scope rather than years alone. The remote DevOps engineer salary guide shows how pay changes with seniority.

Preparing for your first interviews

Most DevOps engineer hiring processes have around 5 stages, usually including a technical deep dive. The DevOps engineer interview guide covers the questions and practical tests in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree to become a DevOps engineer?

Not always. From software engineering is the traditional route, but from system administration or IT operations and structured cloud training plus lab portfolio also lead to jobs when backed by solid evidence of your skills.

How long does it take?

Typical timelines: from software engineering takes 6–18 months of platform-focused work; from system administration or IT operations takes 9–18 months; structured cloud training plus lab portfolio takes 9–15 months.

Is it a remote-friendly career?

It is highly remote-friendly. Infrastructure is managed through code and cloud consoles, so the work is inherently remote.

Can I learn it online?

Online study works well for knowledge and tools. You still need practice on realistic work, feedback from experienced practitioners.

What should I do first?

Start with shell, processes, permissions, DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS, one scripting language, and aim to finish that stage with this evidence: a home server or VM you administer, with notes on problems solved.
