UK Skilled Worker Visa 2026: Salary, English and Sponsorship Requirements

A

The UK Skilled Worker route allows an eligible worker to take an eligible job with an employer approved by the Home Office. It is not a general job-search visa: a candidate normally needs a confirmed offer, an appropriate occupation code and a Certificate of Sponsorship before submitting the visa application. The rules also distinguish between the general salary threshold and the going rate for a particular occupation, so seeing a salary above one headline figure does not by itself establish eligibility.

This guide explains the checks a candidate can make before accepting an offer or paying an application fee. Immigration rules change, individual circumstances differ and the official decision belongs to UK Visas and Immigration. Always verify the current rule and the occupation-specific figure on GOV.UK.

What the Skilled Worker route requires

The official overview identifies four core elements: an approved UK sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship, an eligible occupation and the required salary. These elements work together. A real employer may not hold a sponsor licence, a sponsored employer may offer a role that is not eligible, and an eligible role may still fail the applicable salary test.

Salary requirements in 2026

For the usual Skilled Worker case, GOV.UK states that the salary must generally be at least £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. The going rate is attached to the occupation code and may need to be adjusted for the weekly hours stated by the sponsor. A candidate should therefore compare the annual salary, contracted hours and occupation code rather than relying on a job advert that merely says “visa sponsorship available”.

Some applicants may qualify under different thresholds, including certain healthcare or education roles, new entrants, relevant PhD holders, roles on specified lists and some extensions or updates covered by transitional arrangements. These are rule-based exceptions, not a general right to accept a lower salary. The official guidance indicates that some qualifying cases may use a salary of at least £33,400, but the corresponding percentage of the occupation’s going rate and every other condition still matter.

A practical salary example

If an offer pays £42,000 but the applicable occupation going rate is £45,000, the offer does not meet the usual salary rule because the higher figure controls. Conversely, a salary above the occupation going rate may still fail if it is below the applicable general threshold. Ask the employer for the occupation code, weekly hours and the salary figure that will appear on the Certificate of Sponsorship.

English-language evidence

Applicants normally need to demonstrate speaking, reading, writing and understanding English. GOV.UK lists several possible routes: an accepted UK school qualification, a degree awarded by a UK institution, an overseas degree taught in English and assessed through Ecctis, or a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider. Applicants who already proved English in a qualifying successful immigration application may not need to prove it again.

For a first Skilled Worker application made on or after 8 January 2026, the published guidance generally requires level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. A person who held the route before that date and is extending or updating it may be covered by the B1 rule described in the official guidance. Do not book an arbitrary language test: confirm that the provider, test type, level and validity satisfy the immigration rules.

  • Check whether an exemption applies before paying for a test.
  • If relying on an overseas degree taught in English, check whether an Ecctis assessment is required.
  • Make sure names and identity details match the passport and application.
  • Keep the accepted evidence available when the application is submitted.

Sponsors, occupation codes and the Certificate of Sponsorship

An approved sponsor is an employer authorised by the Home Office to sponsor workers. The public register helps candidates verify the licensed organisation, but candidates should also check that the legal entity named in the offer matches the entity that will sponsor them. Similar trading names and group companies are not automatically interchangeable.

The Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic record with a reference number. GOV.UK says the application normally must be made within three months of receiving it. Before using the reference, compare the job title, duties, occupation code, salary, working hours and location with the written offer. A misleading occupation code can create a refusal risk even when the job title sounds eligible, because classification depends substantially on the actual duties.

  1. Confirm the employer appears on the official sponsor register.
  2. Request the proposed four-digit occupation code.
  3. Compare the role’s actual duties with that code.
  4. Check whether the occupation is eligible and whether any medium-skilled restriction applies.
  5. Compare salary and hours with the current going-rate table.
  6. Review every Certificate of Sponsorship detail before applying.

How to search for genuine sponsored opportunities

Start with employers that are licensed and currently recruiting for work that matches your experience. A sponsor licence does not mean every vacancy is sponsored, so read the advert and ask a precise question before investing heavily in the process. Search our remote jobs directory, review company profiles and use the recruiter search guide to improve discoverability. Candidates comparing international options can also review the working abroad hub.

Be cautious when an intermediary guarantees a visa, asks for payment for a Certificate of Sponsorship, uses only informal messaging accounts or refuses to identify the employing legal entity. Genuine immigration and recruitment costs can exist, but the candidate should understand what a payment is for and verify the organisation independently.

Application checklist

  • A confirmed offer from the sponsoring employer.
  • A valid Certificate of Sponsorship reference.
  • An eligible occupation code matching the duties.
  • Salary and hours meeting the applicable rules.
  • Accepted English-language evidence, where required.
  • A valid passport and any documents required for the applicant’s circumstances.
  • Funds or sponsor certification where the maintenance rules require them.
  • Any required criminal-record certificate or tuberculosis test.
  • Translations that satisfy the document requirements.

Fees, healthcare surcharge amounts, processing times and documentary requirements can change. Calculate them from official sources close to the submission date and allow time to correct inconsistencies before the Certificate of Sponsorship expires.

Frequently asked questions

Is £41,700 enough for every Skilled Worker job?

No. Under the usual rule, the applicant must meet the higher of the general salary threshold and the occupation’s going rate. Some roles and qualifying applicants use different rules, so the occupation code and personal circumstances must be checked.

Can I obtain this visa without a job offer?

The Skilled Worker route requires a confirmed eligible job with an approved sponsor and a Certificate of Sponsorship. Other immigration routes have different purposes and requirements.

Does being on the sponsor register mean every job is sponsored?

No. It shows that an organisation is licensed, not that it will sponsor every role or candidate. Confirm sponsorship for the specific vacancy.

Do existing Skilled Workers need B2 English in 2026?

GOV.UK describes transitional treatment for people who held the route before 8 January 2026 and apply to extend or update it. Check the current official page against the exact application type and dates.
