About AE Studio
AE Studio is a ~160-person, fully bootstrapped applied AI company with over a decade of production AI deployment across finance, defense, aviation, healthcare, and education. The company has generated millions per week in additional revenue for major clients and built AI-enabled educational programs where students perform in the top 1% nationally.
Without outside investors, AE Studio directs resources toward alignment research through the AI Alignment Foundation, a nonprofit founded to scale this work. The company runs a DARPA seedling on alignment and control, engages directly with government on AI policy, and collaborates with Anthropic, Princeton University, University College London, Redwood Research, and MATS. The research team comprises 25 people and is growing.
The Role
AE Studio seeks its first in-house General Counsel to lead legal strategy during a critical growth phase. You will report to executives and shape the legal foundation for multiple concurrent business initiatives:
- Commercial Transformation: Structure outcome-based and productized deals that strengthen margins and focus on measurable results
- Research Grants: Support acquisition and deployment of major research funding for foundational AI alignment work
- Strategic Partnerships: Negotiate first-of-their-kind collaborations with government agencies, research labs, and universities
- Government Contracts: Navigate expanding government work in a new category of contracts and programs
- Intellectual Property: Develop IP strategy across ownership, licensing, protection, and publication
- Core Operations: Manage NDAs, vendor agreements, employment matters, corporate governance, and scalable legal processes
About You
You are a strong generalist with solid legal fundamentals, judgment from real experience, and the ability to master new practice areas quickly. You work effectively alongside executives, make key business calls, and scale legal functions. You thrive in dynamic environments where legal strategy directly enables business growth.
