Job Description
About Arlo
Arlo is rebuilding health insurance for small businesses from first principles. Most American healthcare expenses stem not from medical care itself, but from the surrounding machinery: middlemen taking cuts, undetected fraud, and billing systems designed to fight over payment rather than deliver care. Arlo eliminates these inefficiencies by identifying fraud earlier, steering members toward higher-quality and lower-cost care, automating operational overhead, and removing vendors whose primary business is extracting value.
AI is foundational to this mission. The company deploys AI across underwriting, operations, clinical programs, and member experience to build an insurer that becomes more efficient as technology improves.
Arlo operates at meaningful scale: profitable, managing hundreds of millions in premiums, covering tens of thousands of members, and growing rapidly through brokers, employers, and partners. Backed by Upfront Ventures, 8VC, and General Catalyst, with a team from Palantir, YC companies, and experienced healthcare operators.
The Role
We seek Principal Software Engineers to build systems powering an AI-native insurance company. Insurance operations span underwriting, claims, premium finance, broker operations, member support, and care navigation. Most insurers run these through fragmented vendors, legacy software, and manual workflows. At Arlo, we build our own infrastructure.
You will work closely with operational teams and AI Forward Deployed Engineers to transform real business workflows into AI-native products and internal platforms. The goal is not to add AI to existing software, but to redesign how the work happens entirely.
We seek engineers who own real operational problems end-to-end: product architecture, backend systems, frontend experiences, AI workflows, and production deployment.
What You Will Do
- Design and ship full-stack products across the insurance lifecycle using React, React Native, TypeScript, Python, Postgres, and modern AI infrastructure
- Build AI-native underwriting systems that synthesize risk, structure messy data, and assist decision-making
- Create claims tooling that automates review, coordination, and document processing
- Own operational systems from conception through deployment and iteration
About You
You have deep experience shipping production software at scale, with strong fundamentals in backend systems, databases, and API design. You can move fluently across full-stack development, from database schema to user interface. You understand operational workflows and can translate ambiguous business problems into technical solutions. You are comfortable with ambiguity in early-stage work and can balance speed with sustainability.
