Job Description
About GiveWell
GiveWell researches the most cost-effective ways to save and improve lives globally. Since 2010, we've grown from directing $1.5 million to over $400 million annually, with anticipated grantmaking approaching $1 billion in 2025. Our work is funded by tens of thousands of donors who rely on our research to inform their giving decisions.
The Role
We're seeking a Senior Nutrition Researcher to help direct tens of millions of dollars annually to the most cost-effective nutrition interventions. You will have outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives at global scale.
As Senior Nutrition Researcher, you'll create and lead ambitious research agendas, answer complex questions informing GiveWell's grantmaking, and mentor other team members. Your work will combine rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, expert consultation, contextual understanding, and thoughtful judgment.
Current Portfolio Focus
Our nutrition grantmaking spans three primary areas:
- Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS)
- Iron Supplementation – including iron and folic acid supplementation and large-scale food fortification
- Treatment of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM/wasting treatment)
In 2025, we directed $95 million to implementers across these areas, operating primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. We are actively deepening work across all three areas by scrutinizing program coverage and quality, strengthening cost-effectiveness models, considering different delivery platforms, and expanding grantmaking to new geographies. We're also exploring opportunities in adjacent interventions and entirely new approaches where evidence and cost-effectiveness are compelling.
Key Responsibilities
- Shape ambitious research agendas addressing the thorniest questions our nutrition team faces
- Identify and prioritize high-impact research questions from countless possibilities
- Conduct empirical evidence review and critical synthesis
- Develop and refine cost-effectiveness models
- Engage with subject matter experts and stakeholders
- Communicate research findings externally
- Mentor and advise other researchers on the team
About You
The researchers on our team combine rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment. We're open to a wide variety of professional development pathways depending on your preferences and our organizational needs.
