Job Description

About Wikimedia

Wikipedia is a trusted source of knowledge read by over a billion people monthly in over 300 languages. Operated independently by the Wikimedia Foundation—a non-profit powered mainly by small donations—it remains one of the world's most visited websites.

The Role

We're hiring a Lead Product Manager for Security to shape Wikimedia's product security strategy during a pivotal time as AI transforms both security threats and how people access knowledge online. You'll bring strong technical and security expertise—including familiarity with AI in security contexts—to drive strategy and organizational security culture.

This senior position is open to candidates transitioning from engineering into strategic product roles. Prior product management experience is not required; what matters is technical depth, communication excellence, and security acumen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shape the Wikimedia Foundation's product security strategy and strengthen organizational security culture
  • Determine and drive priorities for a security-focused engineering team, leveraging cross-functional support from designers, data scientists, and community managers
  • Design and develop technical features that enable safe user experiences and prevent bad actors from compromising the platform
  • Communicate strategically with community members in public and private settings about security and privacy work
  • Build strong relationships with volunteers as a representative between the Wikimedia community and Foundation on security matters
  • Partner with department leaders to shape Wikimedia's overall information security posture
  • Stay current on developments in online security, privacy, vulnerability research, and emerging threats

Required Experience

  • At least 7 years of professional experience building products in team settings
  • Minimum 2 years in a security-focused role
  • Proven track record driving significant security initiatives to completion
  • Experience with modern security threats and AI-related security challenges
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and engage diverse stakeholder communities

About Us

Wikimedia's Product Safety and Integrity team keeps Wikipedia stable, trustworthy, and secure for its global community of contributors and readers. This role reports to the Group Product Manager, Safety and Security.

Salary Disclosure: The salary range of $130,000–$190,000 USD annually is an editorial market estimate based on role level, industry standards, and location data. This is not provided by the employer and may vary significantly based on experience, qualifications, location, and other factors.
